Right after the end of the last war, nations were looking to commit themselves to a course of action that would lead to a lasting peace. Thus, the need to have relationships with neighboring countries, to think of them as friends rather than virtual enemies, was extensively developed, and twinning relationships multiplied.
Chartres, very early on, committed itself to that endeavor by signing twinning agreements with three European cities:
Ties to the Entire World
The development of twinning agreements, implemented by the City’s twinning committee, was facilitated by the creation, on February 15, 1960, of the Association des Amis des Jumelages [Association of Friends of Twinning], located at 2, Chanzy Street, 28000 Chartres (Tel: 02 37 21 76 77).
After that date, Chartres will continue to development ties of friendship and fraternity with different world nations. Thus, in 1989, two friendship agreements are signed with Sakurai in Japan, and Cuzco in Peru.
On September 10, 1994, a new twinning was created with Bethlehem, the cradle of our civilization.
