History and Monuments

Noviomagus, which will later become Chichester, was founded by the Romans around 70 AD. They came up with street plans and built the city walls, which were redone with silex stone during the Middle Ages. The promenade along the fortifications (the Walls Walk) today offers a splendid view of the city, with its varied architecture, parks, and gardens.

Chichester Cathedral, which was dedicated in 1108, is the city’s central point. Visitors can go through its cloister and savor the tranquility of the gardens around the Bishop’s Palace.

The Guildhall of Priory Park, where cricket matches and games of bowls take place every year, was built in the 13th century.
The magnificent cross (Tudor Market Cross), donated by Archbishop Story in 1501, is still found where the four main arteries intersect.

The Pallants, of which the superb Pallant House, built in 1712, a skillful mixture of a Gregorian-style house and an art gallery, is a part, are found close to the town center.
The Chichester District Museum, located in Little London Quarter, allows one to find out more about local history.

The Chichester Canal, immortalized by the painter Turner, is a place were one can relax by fishing, paddling, or sailing. A 1968.5 feet (6 km) long towpath allows one to return to port.

The surrounding countryside, the small South Downs villages and green hills create an exceptionally beautiful ensemble. North of Chichester, the Trundle Promontory offers an unrestricted view of the coastal plain. The Weald and Downland Open Museum, with its group of old restored buildings, is nestled at the foot of Singleton Hill.

The Roman palace of Fishbourne, with its mosaic floors, evolved subterranean heating system, and baths is found close to Chichester. The garden has been replanted according to the original Roman plans.

Chichester Port and its surrounding areas make up one of the most appreciated areas along the coastline. They offer a natural habitat for a wealth of flora and fauna.
