The “Chartres Under Light Special” tours will resume in April of 2011. In candlelight, you will go deep into the history of the Cathedral and visit a place imbued with history: the crypt. You will then continue your tour by participating in the “Chartes Under the Lights” activity.
You will trace the footsteps of the great men who made their mark on Chartres History and that of France. This route is not just a simple city tour: it is an initiatory activity that ensures that you will not forget what happened in the past. On this tour, you will encounter De Gaulle, de Lattre de Tassigny, "les poilus" French soldiers from World War I, and General Marceau, that is to say, all the men who ensured that France would remain a free nation.
Notre Dame de Chartres is one of Northern France’s biggest Gothic cathedrals that was dedicated to the Virgin Mary during the 12th and 13th centuries. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
The cathedral is open year round, from 8:30 to 7:30.
It remains open until 10 PM from June to August, on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, as part of its “Extra Evenings” program.
Guided tours of the Cathedral:
Individual: April 1 through October 31: 10:30 (except on Sundays and Mondays), and 3:00. From November 1 through March 31; everyday at 2:30 (except Christmas Day and New Years Day). There are no tours when religious celebrations are going on.
